This calculator uses the same "VA math" method the VA applies when combining multiple service-connected conditions. Enter each individual rating below to see an estimated combined rating.
This tool is for educational purposes only and does not file a claim or guarantee any specific VA decision. The Department of Veterans Affairs makes the final determination on all ratings and payments.
How VA Math Works
VA math does not simply add ratings together. Instead, the VA looks at how much of your body remains "efficient" after each service-connected condition is applied.
- Start at 100% efficient and apply the highest rating first.
- For each additional rating, the VA applies it only to the remaining efficiency.
- The result is rounded to the nearest 10% to get your combined rating.
Example: If you have ratings of 50% and 30%, they are not added to 80%. Instead, 50% leaves you 50% efficient. Then 30% is applied to that remaining 50% (which is 15%). The VA combines 50% and 15% to get 65%, then rounds to 70%.
Not Sure If Your Rating Is Correct?
If this calculator suggests a higher combined rating than what you're currently receiving, or if your conditions have worsened over time, it may be time to seek an increase or file an appeal.
- Review your most recent VA decision letter.
- Make a list of all service-connected conditions and current ratings.
- Gather updated medical records and statements about your limitations.
